A new kind of wireless connection for gadgets. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. Chances are you've become pretty familiar with WiFi as a way to wireless connect to the Internet at home or in the office. Now the WiFi Alliance is out with some new technology it calls WiFi Direct. Marketing director Kelly Davis-Felner says the idea is to allow gadgets and computers to talk to each other...so to speak... without the need for a router....
"Well let's imagine that you and I are going for a hike together. And along comes a bear, for example. Well I whip out my WiFi enabled camera and I snap a picture of that bear. Well you would really like to have a copy of that picture because of course we've just had a very hair raising experience together. So I am able to use WiFi Direct to transfer that immediately to the handset or tablet computer that you might happen to be carrying along."
The expectation is WiFi Direct will become pretty common in gadgets of all kinds. You can find us at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
