2018 could be the year of truly driverless vehicles

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.   Here at the start of a new year, it’s time to talk about the kinds of technology that will really change the way we live and work in the months and years to come.  And it is hard to think of an area more significant that autonomous vehicles.  This past year, I launched a Smart Driving Cars podcast with Professor Alain Kornhauser, faculty chair of autonomous vehicle engineering at Princeton University.  And he says the future is coming…faster than many of us think…

“There’s been some real progress.  Especially Waymo’s in Arizona and Volvo’s in Sweden and the fact that Teslas are out there with autopilot and people are using it everyday.  There has been an enormous fundamental progress.”

This year, it seems likely we’ll begin to see the first truly driverless vehicles providing transportation on public roads.
