Cell phones that do more and more. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Odds are... you just use that cell phone you carry around... just for making calls. But there are phones that let you do a whole lot more. Nokia's 9290 Communicator is designed to take the place of a notebook PC on the road. It flips open to give you a wide color screen and a keyboard and lets you work on documents, spreadsheets and lets you check email and surf the Web. The price... about 600 dollars. The drawbacks are its size... no shirt pocket for this device... and its inability to use higher speed data connections. On the horizon... .is Kyocera's next generation SmartPhone, the 7135... .

"It combines a high end wireless phone with a Palm OS organizer, it has a built in MP3 player, media viewer, does high speed data... up to 144 kilobits per second, it incorporates and expansion card slot for MMC and SD media... so you can add memory, applications or accessories.

Kyocera's Rick Goetter says the 7135 will arrive later this year... .and will slip into a shirt pocket with ease. It should sell for about five hundred dollars... similar to the original price of Kyocera's 6035 SmartPhone... which you can now find on the market for under one hundred dollars. Another alternative... Research in Motion's combination Blackberry wireless phone. Co-CEO Jim Balsillie says the strategy is to make the devices available through a variety of carriers...

"We've also built a large number of international partnerships... dozens of carriers throughout Europe and Asia and North America and Latin America... so Blackberry's available and going to be available really in most of the places where executives would ever travel."
