Wireless Carriers Mine New Markets

Techstination feature for Thursday, August 22, 2002

Mining new markets for wireless phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Sprint is using some snazzy new color screen phones to sell its new high speed wireless services... on what it calls the Sprint PCS Vision Network. Consumer marketing VP Chip Novick...

"I think one of the most exciting applications is the ability to take a picture and share it with others wirelessly. And from phone to phone."

Using little digital camera add on. Service plans that use the high speed network will cost you more... but Sprint and other carriers that have already begun offering similar services... are hoping lots of people will want to do more than just talk on their cell phones. When it comes to teenagers... Virgin Mobile has teamed up with MTV to offer phones with labels like Party Animal... .and pre-paid service plans. Dan Schulman heads Virgin Mobile USA...

"With MTV, you're going to be able to listen to music on your phone, get the latest information on your favorite artists, all delivered right there on your cell phone and this combination is really trying to re-define the way people think about cellular service."

The pay as you go service with no monthly minimum costs 25 cents a minute for the first ten minutes per day... and then 10 cents per minute for the rest of the day. That would mean a teen talking ten minutes per day... would be paying 75 dollars a month for 300 minutes. Sounds expensive to me. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
