Digital Photography on the Cheap... SiPix

Techstination feature for Monday, September 2, 2002

Digital photography on the cheap. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. More and more people are catching on to the fun of taking digital pictures... .with the top selling cameras belonging to some familiar names... . like Sony, Kodak, Olympus, Casio and Fuji. But if you're looking for an inexpensive way to take digital snapshots, a company called SiPix is making some interesting alternatives... starting at just 39 dollars. Marketing director Marie Wesson...

"What we're finding is, we're actually opening up digital imaging, to a wider audience."

SiPix cameras range from the 140 dollar, two megapixel SC2300 to one megapixel and lower models. And then there's the StyleCam Blink. It's a tiny VGA quality camera that can clip onto a key chain. It's hard to recommend that for pictures you'd like to print and keep. But there is a coolness factor involved... .

"The industry has responded to that very well. As fast as we can make them, they're being sold. And that's been the case since we started selling the camera. It's very small, it's about two inches by two inches and it weighs about one and a half ounces."

It ships with an AC power adaptor and the camera doubles as a Web cam for video conferencing as well. If you're serious about digital photography, you're better off spending the extra money for a three or four megapixel camera up front. What SiPix is shooting for is the fun, snapshot market.
