Is the Future in Thin Flexible Screens?

Techstination feature for Monday, September 9, 2002

Is the future... in thin flexible screens? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. You may have thought some of the scenes from the summer movie Minority Report were strictly sci-fi. Animated characters on a cereal box. Newspaper text that changes as stories break. But those kinds of scenarios aren't that far fetched... according to Janice Mahon. She's VP of Technology Commercialization at Universal Display Corporation... which is developing what are called OLED screens... or organic light emitting device technology... .

"Organic light emitting device technology has the unique feature that it can be built effectively on a plastic or a flexible substrate medium. As a result, the future holds the opportunity to have that electronic newspaper or that screen that will roll in and roll out from a pen or any kind of a apparatus. "

The companies partners include Sony and Samsung and researchers at Princeton University. OLED displays have vibrant colors and consume far less power than typical LCD screens... .

"OLEDs are wonderfully... very fast response time. So beautiful video rate imagery. Note how wonderful the vibrancy and the color is at every angle as you look at it compared to my laptop which I have here."

You'll be seeing it for yourself... in the not too distant future... in color screen cell phones ... and PDAs at first... .and maybe someday in a flexible screen you pull out of a pen. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
