Intel Pushes Wireless With Banias

Techstination feature for Friday, September 13, 2002

The next mobile processor from Intel. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Intel calls it Banias... .a line of processors for notebook computers that will arrive next year with a variety of new features. Executive vice president Sean Maloney...

"It's the first time that the core of a notebook computer has been designed for power optimization, for performance and for communication all in a balance. Those are the three things that users want. You want the battery to last, you want a good level of performance and then you want really, really good communication capability."

With different standards emerging for wireless Internet connections... .Intel is incorporating chipset support for both 802.11b and 802.11a... .

"To use the old words from a movie... to change them slightly, we don't need no stinking standards war, right? The last thing that the industry needs is to have an "a" versus "b" versus "g" versus whatever argument. So what we're doing in this device is we're building in support simultaneously for both the main standards that are out there right now, which is A and B. So the user doesn't need to worry about that, you just get which ever is the best link at any time."

The company is also planning to use wireless technology to connect PCs to TVs and stereos as part of its Extended Wireless Initiative. Intel is hoping the new Banias processors will help it maintain its edge over AMD in the notebook computer market... .which continues to fare better than the market for desktop PCs.
