Not a PDA....Not a Notebook....The Nexio

Techstination feature for Wednesday, October 2, 2002

Yet another new type of handheld computer. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's not a Palm device... .or a Pocket PC... .Samsung calls it the Nexio...

"Nexio is a new wireless hand PC that Samsung will be introducing later on in the fourth quarter. It's a great product that has integrated wireless LAN as well as a fantastic screen. In fact our display is a five inch display that's capable of doing 800 by 480 resolution. And what that really provides you is a great mobile experience... because you can see the Internet the way it was meant to be seen."

Director of product marketing David Nichols. The devices uses pen input... .or can use a fifty dollar add-on keyboard. It's somewhere between a PDA and a notebook computer... .too big for a shirt pocket... .but just about right for a jacket pocket or a handbag. It uses Microsoft's CE.net operating system... .and includes pocket versions of Word and Outlook. Samsung initially is targeting the Nexio as a business tool...

"Well we're really attacking the enterprise market with this device and because of that we're really doing a very controlled launch. We're working with people who have defined applications and defined needs and making sure that we implement those solutions correctly and really have some good success with that during the fourth quarter of this year. As we have more and more success, we'll broaden our distribution later on in 2003."

Hopefully ... the 750 dollar price tag will drop by then. With handheld sales slow as it is... .and more devices combining cell phone functions with PDAs... there are plenty of questions about the chances for Nexio's success. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
