Mini-Microscope for Fertility Testing

Techstination feature for Friday, October 4, 2002

A mini-microscope for fertility testing. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There have been a variety of ways women and doctors have used over the years to predict ovulation. Now a new method is available in the United States... that uses a small microscope and a woman's saliva. Obstetrics specialist... Dr. Anita Sadaty... says the device... developed in Italy... is called The Donna...

"The way it works is a sample of saliva is placed on a little lens. The sample's allowed to dry... and then you take a look at the saliva once it's dry and a certain pattern will appear once a woman starts approaching ovulation."

Dr. Sadaty, who is serving as a consultant to the distributor of the device, says it has a number of advantages over other ovulation testing methods...

"Because the test measures increasing estrogen levels, or at least a by product of increasing estrogen levels, it gives you a three to four day window of opportunity."

The doctor says the lipstick sized microscope with a built in light gives a big advantage to women with irregular cycles. And, it can also be less expensive. We should note it doesn't take the mini-microscope to look for the same pattern in saliva... .a regular microscope... if you happen to have one, will do. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
