If you already have a fairly new computer and want to add the capability... Toshiba has just entered the market with a combo drive that can store data on DVD or CD recordable discs. "It's going to be basically for PC users that want to record their own movies to disc and then play them back in their DVD players."

The add on drive sells for about 350 dollars. A slimmer version is being made for notebooks as well. Toshiba, like a number of other manufacturers is bundling DVD creation software from a company called Cyberlink... .where Michael Demeyer tells us... the drives will eventually eclipse the popularity of those that only record CDs

"Certainly over the next couple years, CD writables will continue to be the dominant format in units sold over the next two or three years. But the expectation is the DVD drives will account for somewhere between 15 and 50 million units in 2005 which would represent anywhere from 15 to 25 or 30 percent of the marketplace for writable optical drives."
