Maxtor's One Button Hard Drive Backup

Techstination feature for Wednesday, October 30, 2002

Backing up your data... .at the touch of a button. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are you've got lots of stuff stored on your computer that you don't want to lose. Documents, data from financial programs, digital photo or music files and who knows what else. It's easy enough to back up those important files onto CD or Zip drive... .but lots of people don't seem to bother. At Maxtor, they've designed a new series of external hard drives to simplify the process. The Personal Storage 5000 line... which ranges from 80 to 250 gigabytes... .does back ups at the touch of a button. Maxtor's Anna Jen...

"It's kind of like the sync button on your Palm Pilot. Press the button and something happens. And it's also like on scanners... press the button and images are automatically scanned. And now we've made a hard drive back up copying as easy as pushing a button and syncing up your Palm Pilot. So push the button ... the one touch button... and it automatically makes a duplicate copy of your files so that you always have a second copy as a back up."

There have been plenty of solutions before that just required one or two clicks of a mouse... but for some people pushing a physical button may be easier to remember. The drives are priced starting at 200 dollars for the 80 gigabyte version. If you can use the extra storage... .Maxtor has created a worthwhile solution. For simply backing up files... CD-R or CDRW discs are a much less expensive alternative. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
