3D On Your PC

3D on your PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. 3D viewing has been around for decades... .with those paper or plastic glasses they used to hand out for novelty 3D movies in theatres or at amusement parks. A company called X3D Technologies has created hardware and software that brings 3D to your PC. You still have to wear those funky glasses... but CEO Elliot Klein says the latest version of the system turns any 2D content on your computer into 3D... .

"So you could watch any existing PC game or DVD or live television broadcast and change it from flat 2D into exciting X3D, which stands for extreme 3D."

The system does work... and can be a lot of fun... but will only work on PCs with CRT monitors. If you have a flat screen LCD, forget it. And an Nvidia graphics chip set is needed for 3D games. Is the whole idea a gimmick? Or is there really a mass market for 3D? The CEO says...

"3D is taking off and we're leading the way. The problem with 3D in the past has been very little content. What our software does is enable any PC game or any television broadcast, streaming media file, to be viewed in the home on one's computer in true 3 dimensions."

The system sells for about a hundred dollars. A set of wireless 3D glasses is an additional 40 dollars and a TV tuner card is needed to add that extra dimension to television. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
