DVD Sales Spur Studios

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 28, 2002

Whether you're talking James Bond... or Star Wars, movie studios more and more are counting on those DVD sales. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With DVD players having become the fastest growing consumer electronics product in history, the big movie studios like MGM and Twentieth Century Fox are cashing in in a big way and not just when blockbuster films are released on DVD. The Bond films, the Rocky films, Woody Allen films and even popular TV series... wind up getting released as gift sets for the holidays as well. At Twentieth Century Fox, Peter Staddon is senior VP for home entertainment...

"The revenues that are generated by the home entertainment divisions of studios nowadays are so significant that they are an integral part of the studios finances and we're just happy to be able to help provide the cash flow to help make the films."

Some titles make more money on DVD than they did in theatrical release. Twentieth Century Fox is counting on Star Wars Episode II and Ice Age to be big holiday season sellers...

"The interesting thing about both those two films, what they have in common, is that they are both completely digital films. And what that means from the DVD's perspective is that the DVD presentation of those movies is absolutely stunning because there is no film or no intermediate element between the digital work and the DVD."

So technically, you can't even really call them films anymore. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
