Tribes: Popular Multi-Player Only Game

Techstination feature for Friday, February 19, 1999

One of the hottest new games is multi-player only. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. There are lots of computer games out there that let you play against other people over the Internet, but you can also play by yourself against the computer. StarSiege Tribes from Dynamix has taken a different approach. You buy the CD ROM, but to play, you have to be online.....(sound) Dynamix VP Jeff Hoff it's a futuristic shooter type game with rich graphics ....

"The first thing you notice about this game is how spectacular going inside and outside. Historically, there have always been levels in shooters which take a lot of load time and lag time in between going from level to level. And they've never gone outdoors. This allows you to both go indoors and outdoors in huge landscapes that are filled with snow and fog and rain. Just spectacular."

You can play over any Internet connection with at least a 28.8 modem. And while it's a shooter...

"There's no blood in here at all. Instead of gore and blood...typically in shooters you shoot somebody and their entrails end up on the back wall behind you...and that's one type of game. In this case we decided to go for a little more strategy and action and that combination for all the interest."

You communicate with teammates from around the world to coordinate your strategy. Tribes sells for under forty dollars.
