PC Utiliities Still Selling

Techstination feature for Wednesday, December 18, 2002

Add on utilities for Windows and Macs live on. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft and Apple have been building more and more features into their operating systems... to help customers keep their PCs up and running. But there's still a big market out there for companies like Symantec, Aladdin Systems and V Communications to sell a variety of add on utilities. Aladdin... is best know for products like the StuffIt compression utility for both Mac and Windows. CEO Jonathan Kahn...

"I think there will always be a strong market for add on utilities. There's always things the OS does and doesn't do and there's always things that people want it to do, that it will never do. So our goal is to find out what people need, what's missing in the OS and what can we enhance and provide more. In the case of StuffIt, per say, we do more than XP does for zipping. We also let you create custom applications so you can have simple drag and drop applications that will send compressed files. We integrate into Microsoft Office."

Aladdin has partnered with V Communications to market utilities that include Easy Uninstall and Internet Cleanup. V Communications is selling the software bundled as a SystemSuite. VP Jeff Hyman...

"SystemSuite and Fix-It provide the tools for the user to be able to maintain and keep their system performing well. For example, the registry, you add and delete products. The registry can get gunked up. We've got a registry cleaner built into it."

Fifty tools in all... giving Norton SystemWorks a run for its money... at a price of under sixty dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
