Digital Music on Your Stereo System

Techstination feature for Friday, January 10, 2003

Bringing digital music to your home stereo. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Lots of people, especially young people, are storing their music collections digitally on computer hard drives these days. That's fine for listening while you're at your PC, but not so fine if you'd like to listen to those files through a home stereo system. More and more devices are being introduced that allow you to access digital music through a stereo... and among those being announced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is from a company called CD3O. Marketing VP James Scanlan...

"Previous attempts have forced you to go to the PC and start something there and then you get to listen to it somewhere else. Or constrain you to using a very tiny LCD screen that you have to peer at to try to find your songs. We've actually done a dual approach. So you can go to the PC and we have a nice graphical client so you can select all your songs and get things playing. Or we have a unique voice guide interface."

The CD3O box ... either a wired or wireless network model... .plugs into your stereo and connects to your PC which serves this music... using audible navigation...

"You can press, using the attached remote control... m-i-l... and it will say Miles Davis. And you press play."

CD3O says its devices will sell for between 149 and 249 dollars. Another option is to download music to a digital music player like Apple's iPod or Creative's Nomad Jukebox... and plug it into the stereo system. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
