Consumers want more high definition programming before they invest in the technology. And programmers want more high definition consumers before they invest in it. People who have bought into high definition so far have limited numbers of shows to watch. A company called ADS Tech hopes to fill the void with a box that up converts video signals to high definition. CEO Mike McCoy...

"What we're doing is we're adding a lot of picture detail and also de-interlacing. Most of the video signals we have in the house are interlaced and using a technology from the 1940s. This will de-interlace and make the picture look much better as well as up scale. "

Similar ... but more expensive equipment is often used by broadcasters. How much improvement is there in the picture?

"Sometimes when you get into very high definition it's going to become very subjective. It is, in some respects, for the videophile. But when you look at a standard television signal compared to something coming through the UpConverter, you can notice a big difference."

The ADS Tech UpConverter should be available this spring for about 600 dollars. For those who are impatient with cable and satellite companies... .it's at least a temporary solution.
