irock! Adding Images to Digital Music

Techstination feature for Tuesday, February 11, 2003

Adding images to digital music. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Little MP3 music players are a dime a dozen these days. Actually, they aren't quite that cheap, but prices have become more reasonable. They basically come in two flavors... devices that use flash memory... and others, like Apple's iPod, that store entire music libraries on hard drives. First International Digital..a Motorola spin-off has created a new, flash memory based player called the irock! 730i... .that includes a larger than usual LCD screen that displays pictures, text and lyrics along with the audio from what are called MP3i files. VP Randy Cavaiani...

"We're working on content deals with a number of record labels right now to create content in MP3i. However, the most important thing is that right out of the box the user can create their own. What we've done is we've included a copy of a retail product that we sell called MP3i Creator."

The iRock 730i will arrive this spring for under 140 dollars. No matter what type of digital music player you own, the company makes another gadget, the 300W FM transmitter... that can come in handy. It plugs into a headphone jack and broadcasts the sound to a car FM radio...

"The transmit distance is generally 10 to 30 feet depending on the environment."

One down side is the number of batteries the device goes through if you use it all the time. The company tells us an adaptor that plugs into a cigarette lighter is in the works. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
