It wasn't all that long ago when families and friends would gather in living rooms, pull up a white screen and break out a movie or slide show projector to share pictures and home movies. Now, it's getting easier and easier to use a PC to create professional looking productions that just pop into a DVD player in the family room. Apple and Sony have focused on building PCs for those kinds of things. Microsoft has released a 20 dollar add-on for Windows XP, the Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition that includes applications for creating slide shows and movies. At Ulead, which makes a variety of programs to simplify the tasks, product manager Travis White tells us...

Ulead's Video Studio 7 is a hundred dollar full fledged package for editing and creating digital movies you can save onto CDs or DVDs. The company makes a 50 dollar package that has less of a learning curve...

"DVD Movie Factory is for users who just want to get their video onto a DVD as fast as possible. It has a feature called direct to disc which you capture directly from your camcorder or TV or VCR, and it'll burn that content right onto the DVD complete with menus and chapter points."
