Kyocera 7135 Smart Phone

Techstination feature for Monday, March 3, 2003

Kyocera's next smart phone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Kyocera Wireless was a pioneer in combining the capabilities of a cell phone with a Palm PDA with its original smart phone in March of 2001. The company says about 260 thousand have been sold. Now it has created the 7135... that packs lots of new features... into a smaller device. Senior product manager Rick Goetter...

"For starters, we've added a 65 thousand color transflective display screen with probably the brightest backlight of any device available. We've added an expansion card slot that handles both MMC and SD card formats. We've added a propriety MP3 player that allows you to listen to the music of your choice and there's also a digital media viewer."

That lets you view photos or video clips. The 7135 also is capable of sending and receiving data on Verizon's high speed wireless data network. While it resembles a Handspring Treo in size, but has a full telephone keypad. The form factor gives it an edge over Palm's new Tungsten W... and other competitors...

"A smart phone's ability to operate as a phone first we believe is really key to its success with the user and to its longevity as a device."

This time around, Kyocera faces more competition in the cell phone PDA field, from devices that run software from Microsoft, Symbian, Research in Motion and Danger as well as Palm. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
