Can Sony Ericsson connect? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The partnership that was formed between Ericsson and Sony to create cell phone handsets hasn't paid off so far. It is the number five handset maker... far behind market leaders Nokia and Motorola with only a six percent market share. But the company is hoping its new line of mobile devices will change that. The T610 for example has a built in camera that can even use a flash... along with a bright color screen and a joystick for gaming. Senior marketing VP Philip Vanhoutte...

"Picture messaging will take the marketplace by storm. It's already happening in Japan, it's now moving on in fact to North America also to Europe and to Asia. So that's happening as we speak."

What could spur consumer interest is a drop in price for sending picture messages. T-Mobile is doing that in Europe ... cutting the rate next month from the current 29 cents per message down to a dime. Sony Ericsson will also be coming out with the first CDMA mobile phone... that's the technology used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS... that includes Bluetooth capability...

"A lot of people have been waiting for a phone in CDMA land that can lend a hand to PDA devices or notebooks or why not digital cameras and use this as a mobile gateway while on the road."

The T608 should be out during the second quarter of this year. Also on the horizon... a Bluetooth MP3 music player that can double as a wireless headset and the P800 Smartphone. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
