Techstination feature for Monday, March 17, 2003

Paying for premium channels... on the Web. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. On the heels of an announcement of a new 24 hour pay video service on the Internet called ABC News Live, Yahoo! has unveiled a new 9.95 a month subscription service. Yahoo! Platinum will include added content tying into two top TV shows... Survivor from CBS and American Idol from Fox. And, says Yahoo! senior VP Jim Moloshok...

"We have a very unique relationship, where for the first time in its history, we'll be bringing all of the preliminary rounds of the NCAA March Madness to the Internet."

Yahoo! Platinum will offer content from ABC News as well, but not the new ABC News Live 24 hour Web channel which has a contract with Real Networks. ABCNews.com Senior VP and General Manager Bernard Gershon...

"What we're really doing is creating a really small, at this point, Internet news network...taking a bunch of live events that we're streaming during the course of the day and putting them together as one streaming video channel on the Internet."

The channel is available by broadband only to RealOne SuperPass subscribers or through ABC for 4.95 a month. It could provide a way for people to watch developments in Iraq... without having a TV on their desks at work...

"We're definitely looking at a at work prime time audience."

ABCNews.com says the audience is growing... and eventually could give real competition to all news channels... on that other streaming video box... the TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
