AOL Adds Pop-Up Controls

New pop up ad controls from AOL. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The leading online service provider has joined the battle against pop-ups. Next to Spam, unwanted email, pop-up ads are perhaps the biggest annoyance to Web surfers. AOL's VP of product marketing, Jeff Kimball...

"The functionality today, Web pop-up controls that we are announcing, is about when members get on the Internet, they're surfing around the Internet, doing the things they love to do every day on AOL and they get annoyed, frankly, with other Windows that appear. Windows they don't want, windows they may not want, windows that may be slowing them down."

It wasn't that long ago when AOL was one of the worst pop-up offenders. Late last year the company pledged to phase out pop-up ads on its own service. The new controls will let subscribers choose which, if any, pop-ups they want to view...

"We're really about putting members in control here. So if they want to receive pop-ups from AOL or from the Web, that is their option now. But when you go to do something like online banking or commerce sites, we don't get in the way of those things that appear, those pop-ups that appear."

The new tool will only work for subscribers using the latest, 8.0 version of AOL software. To use them, just type in the key words... pop-up controls. There are a variety of pop-up fighting software tools available for non-AOL subscribers, including the latest version of the Netscape browser from AOL. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
