RCA Cell Docking System

Techstination feature for Friday, December 31, 2004

Combining your cell phone…with your regular phone line. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Just about everyone uses a cell phone to communicate away from home. But using it in the home can be a problem…since you can only have one handset per phone number. So if it rings…while it's in a charging cradle in another room…it may be difficult to answer. Thomson's RCA brand plans to offer a solution in the coming months..a cell docking system. Product manager Dan Crupi…

"It gives you the ability to make and receive cell calls from your regular home phones. Anywhere in your house, any room of your house."

The cell phone charges in a docking station…that is also connected to a cordless phone system. You can select…on the cordless handset…whether to make or receive calls on your cell..or on your standard phone line…

"One of the biggest advantages is to take advantage of your free nights and weekends for example…making your long distance calls, but making it from a much more comfortable handset. Some of the cell phones are getting rather small these days. This allows the user much more comfort, if you will, on a longer call for example."

At least one smaller company has tried this kind of thing before. RCA thinks it is ready for a mass market and says will begin selling the Cell Docking System during the second quarter of 2005 for about 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
