Another Small Company's Focus on Digital Photos

Techstination feature for Monday, April 21, 2003

Another small company focuses on digital photography. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. The growing popularity of digital cameras is turning back the clock for small software companies. Years ago, lots of small companies were churning out programs in a rapidly growing market for personal computers. Now there are small companies creating software that competes with giants like Microsoft and Adobe in the digital picture taking arena. Dan Slavin heads an outfit called Photolightning...

"What our software does is make it very, very easy to get photos out of the camera, onto the computer, allow you to pick the photos you like and those you want to discard and very quickly make perfect prints at home, send emails to family and friends, upload to professional online photo finishers like Shutterfly, SnapFish, Walmart, make slideshows, etcetera. Regardless of what you want to do, it's a very, very fast, very easy way to get this done. And the goal of this product was if you had 24 photos in your camera, in five minutes or less they were out of your camera, onto your computer, figured out what you like and you don't like, you've pressed the button, you're making perfect prints, you've sent your email, etcetera."

The program lacks more sophisticated photo editing tools, which Slavin argues most consumers don't use anyway. But the ease of use and common sense features are impressive.

"If you want to email photos, we've actually got a very, very unique email routine. All I have to do is click email photos, press next, and we'll actually put these photos into the body of an email."

The software is available for 40 dollars on the Web at Photolightning.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
