New Functions for Tivo

Techstination feature for Tuesday, April 29, 2003

New functions for Tivo. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Tivo has become the best known brand of personal video recorders... devices that allow you to pause live TV and record shows onto hard drives. It's a category that has been catching on more slowly than had initially been forecast, but for lots of consumers who have PVRs, they wouldn't want to do without them. Now Tivo is selling a 99 dollar upgrade to its Series 2 boxes, called the Home Media Option. Senior product marketing manager Claudia Romanini it enables the Tivo box to connect to home networks and the Internet... giving it...

"The ability to stream music and photos from a home PC through a Tivo to a TV as well as the ability to request programs to be scheduled remotely to your Tivo at home. And what we call multi-room viewing which is the ability to connect multiple Series 2 DVRs in a home and allow them to access each other's program lists and share programs."

But unlike rival ReplayTV, which is being sold off by SonicBlue, Tivo doesn't allow video to be streamed from one unit to another..

"We're actually not streaming the video, we are copying the program from one DVR to the other.

Copying the program can take 45 minutes or more, making the feature a lot less useful. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
