Pocket Co-Pilot Goes Live

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 27, 2003

The promise of marrying GPS with a wireless data link. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Princeton University Professor Alain Kornhauser has been creating technology to improve transportation for years... using global positioning satellite signals and software for tracking freight shipments... and Co-Pilot software for consumers. It runs on desktops, notebooks and PocketPCs. And using a handheld... with the new Pocket Co-Pilot Live... the capability is there to give drives GPS guided maps and directions that can also incorporate data received wirelessly in real time...

"Weather information and real time traffic information. Now we're at the very beginning of this. It is not completely automated to do all this but certainly it's been the vision of everybody to do this."

Very few state or regional transporation departments are currently making traffic information available for this kind of service. But the bet is, they will, and GPS systems like Pocket Co-Pilot Live will be able to steer drivers around traffic problems automatically. In the meantime, the wireless data link enables vehicles with the system to be tracked from a PC anywhere in the world...

"In case one of their loved ones is going someplace, they just may want to have information available somewhat continuously as to how they're progressing on their trip."

Kornhauser is hopeful wireless carriers will in time change wireless data pricing models to make using the technology really practical. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
