Where ReplayTV goes from here. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. ReplayTV was the first company on the market with a digital video recorder... the technology also used by Tivo to allow you to pause live television and record programs onto a hard drive. It was acquired by SonicBlue... which declared bankruptcy not too long ago... and has sold ReplayTV along with the Rio line of digital music players to Digital Networks North America. Replay products president Jim Hollingsworth one of the problems faced by Replay and Tivo has been to get consumers to understand how cool the technology is...

"If you look at the sales that we experienced last year in the marketplace, we saw almost a million units of sales of DVR enabled products in total and that's looking to more than double this year in 2003."

That's still relatively small in comparison, say, to the growth of DVD players. One reason why... has been pricing. But Hollingsworth says ReplayTV is dropping the base unit price to 149 dollars after a rebate and is adding new features...

"You want to record a show at 8 o'clock at night but you've already got another show that you've previously set to record, what the ReplayTV network recording will do for you is ... it will say hey, you can't record two shows here at once, but there's another ReplayTV on the network that's available that can record that program for you."

If you have more than one and they are linked together on a network. But one of the downsides is both ReplayTV and Tivo charge individual subscription fees for each box in the home. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
