Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...Philips New Flat Screen

Techstination feature for Tuesday, June 24, 2003

A mirror that transforms into a flat screen TV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. You walk into a hotel room... .and there's a mirror on the wall. Pick up a remote... press a button... and instead of your reflection... you're watching television. Philips Electronics has created the technology. VP Gregg Chason...

"It's something that we've been working on recently which takes the electronics which you've seen in the other rooms of LCD and to try to seamlessly integrate them into the home in a fashion that is very pleasing in a place where d?cor is very important to people. For example, in a hotel or public spaces where design is a key factor. We've incorporated the LCD behind a special film that laminates glass which allows us to get 100 percent of the light transmission through the material. Yet when the television is off, you get a high reflectivity level emulating a mirror."

Different sizes will be available by the end of this year... first to institutional buyers such as hotels... but Philips plans to introduce Mirror TVs into the home market before 2005. Pricing has not yet been set. Philips says it will be reasonable... but keep in mind... the company also makes a 17 hundred dollar Pronto remote...

"For 17 hundred dollars of course you can control your entire home theatre system. And with the new Philips iPronto you also have the ability to control other devices in your home."

Marketing manager Tracy PoPriore. The device can also browse the Web... so you can go online to check the balance in your bank account after the purchase. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
