Microsoft Pumps Up Pocket PCs

Techstination feature for Wednesday, June 25, 2003

Microsoft pumps up Pocket PCs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's called Windows Mobile... a whole new name for the Microsoft operating system that runs Pocket PCs... which are still way behind Palm operating system handhelds in popularity. Microsoft's lead product manager Ed Suwanjindar...

"There's really three main things that we've built into this new software. The easy and automatic configuration for wireless networks. Better access to over the air email, calendar and contacts through integration with the upcoming version of Exchange 2003... and an improved media experience to extend the use of media on these devices providing higher quality audio and video."

New handhelds from a variety of manufacturers will include Windows Mobile... and some existing Pocket PCs will be upgradeable. At leading Pocket PC maker Hewlett Packard, handhelds VP Ted Clark says three iPaq models are being updated... and the h2200 is all new. It's slimmer and features both SD and Compact Flash expansion slots. About whether HP's sales have been hurt by Dell's entry into the handheld business, Clark says...

"I think actually what's happened is share is being taken from the Palm camp, if you will. We're on an upward trend in terms of our share and if you look at the overall revenue for handhelds, we are absolutely ahead of the rest of the market in terms of what really counts... which is making money on products in the marketplace."

But more competition is on the way... .with new Windows Mobile devices from Gateway, Panasonic and JVC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
