New Palm OS Gadgets on the Way

Techstination feature for Friday, June 27, 2003

New gadgets from Palm on the way. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With increasing competition form Microsoft's Pocket PC platform... now called Windows Mobile... it could be difficult for Palm to dominate the handheld market as it has for years. It plans to spin off Palm Source this fall... that's the side of the company that makes and licenses the Palm operating system. Palm Source chief executive David Nagel says his strategy is to improve tools that will make devices using his operating system more valuable to businesses... there are new partnerships with IBM and Novell... and to bring the Palm OS to new devices... such as a watch from Fossil...

"One of the hallmarks of our strategy is to work with a lot of innovative people who have ideas for doing devices other than just sort of standard PDAs."

Can Palm maintain its lead with new Windows Mobile devices arriving from HP, Dell... and newcomers Gateway, Panasonic and JVC?

"The latest U.S. retail figures came out by NPD, the firm that tracks these things, and last week we had about 82 and a half percent of the share of the U.S. retail market. So we're holding our own and we seem to be doing actually quite well in the enterprise and we're beginning to get traction in the important new market of telecommunications and on the SmartPhone and the converged devices side.

Combination phone/Palm PDAs have been introduced by Kyocera, Samsung and Handspring..which is being purchased by Palm hardware company. A new version of Handspring's Treo ... smaller in size... and bigger in features... including a built in camera... will be out this fall. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
