Notebooks Big and Small

Techstination feature for Wednesday, August 6, 2003

Notebooks big and small... and those that are in between. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There are big notebook computers on the market that really can replace desktop PCs... .and there are thin and light models. One of the best compromises we've seen is Fujitsu's LifeBook P5000. It comes in at under four pounds... with a DVD/CD-RW drive... a 10 and a half inch display... and a 900 MHz Centrino processor... that includes built in wireless networking and extends battery life to as long as 10.5 hours with an optional second battery. Pricing starts at about 15 hundred dollars. If you're looking for all of the power in a desktop in a portable machine... WinBook's J4 line... packs up to a 3 GHz Pentium 4 processor... a 60 gigabyte hard drive, a built in DVD burner, and ATI Radeon graphics. WinBook's Ed Lukens...

"The product was designed to be a high end, flagship model that would offer the performance of Intel's very fastest desktop processor but would offer battery life that was at least acceptable to customers, where you would be getting at least two hours of battery life. And then offer sufficient cooling. So this was the design concept behind it."

The power comes at a price... .over three thousand dollars and nearly eight and a half pounds. You can save some money by buying through the pre-owned section of WinBook's Web site. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
