Is There Zip Left in Iomega?

Is there zip left in Iomega? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With sales of its once popular Zip drives continuing to fall, Iomega is looking to some new storage technologies to ensure its future. CEO Werner Heid says what are called RRD drives are designed to replace tape back up systems... and Digital Capture Technology... the company hopes... will find its way into a variety of consumer electronics products. It uses small 1.5 gigabyte discs that will sell for about ten dollars...

"The DCT technology we really believe is going to be a real bridge technology which will fit in many, many consumer electronics as well as computing and mobile applications. So we're talking about replacing tape in digital camcorders with this media. 1.5 gigabytes give you the equivalent of about three hours of MPEG 4 recording at DVD quality. It will most likely be used in applications like video players, in the future game consoles."

RRD drives... which use 35 gigabyte hard disk type cartridges... could also be used in much higher end video cameras. Iomega, which not long ago announced plans to lay off 200 employees... or about a quarter of its work force... is counting on the new drive technologies, which will arrive in the first half of next year, to turn the company around.
