The Growth of Biometrics

Techstination feature for Wednesday, August 27, 2003

The growth of biometrics. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Its new customers include Baltimore Airport, American Express, city hall in Los Angeles and police headquarters in New York City. A company called Bioscrypt makes devices that provide access control using fingerprints. VP Julia Webb says with all of the attention to homeland security... biometric technology is growing quickly...

"Based on a number of different forecasts, the market in 2002 was approximately 200 million. That's projected to grow to about 2.2 billion in 2006. Over 50 percent of that revenue is from the fingerprint sector of the biometric space. Fingerprint technology will continue to be the primary technology going into 2006."

Even if sexier technologies such as face and iris recognition sometimes capture more headlines. And fingerprint access control devices are also showing up on more and more computer systems for security...

"Targus for example makes pods that you've probably seen on the market that are fingerprint USB pods that a number of Fortune 100 organizations have started to use. Those pods actually go out with the Bioscrypt algorithm tied to the license of that piece of hardware."

The advantage to computer users besides the added security is... using a fingerprint can mean you have one less password to remember. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
