Are DVRs ready to become the next big thing? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Chances are if you rent or buy movies to watch on your TV... DVDs have replaced videotapes in your household. But while digital video recorders... or DVRs... have increased in popularity devices like Tivos or ReplayTV boxes have a long way to go before they are common as DVD players. Samsung Electronics ... which has just introduced a DirecTV receiver with Tivo technology that can record up to one hundred hours of programming... thinks that will change. Senior VP Peter Weedfald...

"These types of devices that are very easy to use are allowing consumers to gain more time. And in a very complex world that we're in, in a very fast paced world with children and families and home and work and travel, I think these types of devices are critically important. I think Samsung is putting its leadership prowess in the manufacturing sector to gain fast momentum in this space."

What has held sales of DVRs back? Weedfald says TV watching faces increasing competition...

"You've got Internet you can spend your time on, you've got television you can spend your time on, you've got your family you can spend your time on, you can go shopping in the mall if you want to spend your time and then there's all the business attributes that you have. I think it's a matter of explaining... actually standing and delivering to consumer America... the value proposition of this device."

The value being that DVRs let you watch the shows you want... when you want... recording them automatically. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
