A Return to Laser Printers

Techstination feature for Thursday, September 11, 2003

A return to laser printers. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It's one of the biggest complaints you'll hear from owners of personal computers. The high cost of cartridges for ink jet printers. The latest printers do a great job of printing digital photos... and handling everyday needs. But they are expensive to use. One way around that issue... is to use a laser printer when you are just printing text. Samsung's ML1710 has a suggested price of 199 dollars... but has been selling for half that price after some rebates. And the cost of printing?

"For this type of product, we're looking at about two cents per page. So it's very, very economical. You're looking at about three thousand pages that you can get out of a single cartridge."

Samsung's Chanel O'Connor. The toner cartridge is easier to replace than cartridges in many ink jet printers... which remain top sellers...

"If you look at the overall, the printer market, the ink jet is still the very dominant player and they have a bigger market share compared to laser. However, the laser market is still very strong."

For people who take work home from the office or students who print lots of text... a low cost laser printer makes a lot of sense. Samsung faces competition from Hewlett Packard, Brother and Lexmark. If space is a big consideration... and you only have room for one printer... and need the color option, an ink jet model is still a better choice. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
