Microsoft Updates Media Center PC

Techstination feature for Tuesday, September 30, 2003

An update to the media center PC. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. With lots of consumers buying computers at lower and lower price points... .many in the five or six hundred dollar range... .how can PC makers get people to spend more. One way is by selling machines that run a special Media Center version of Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. Hewlett Packard is among the companies rolling out the latest version. Product manager Tom Markworth...

"The HP Media Center has really rejuvenated our high end business because it's giving consumers a reason to want to step up to over a thousand dollars. And that's typically where Media Centers start. But with the ability to actually watch television, use an electronic programming guide to record television stations, to play higher end games, to do all sorts of digital video editing, music playback, photo playback, video playback all using a remote control. Consumers are finding reasons to step up."

The machines can control either a satellite or cable box. The new editions include a flip up cover on top of the PC for docking stations for HP digital cameras. One of the goals, also is to allow all of that digital content to be shared around the house... on other PCs... or through devices that hook up to televisions and stereo systems. The new Media Center PCs from HP range from 15 hundred dollars up to 2 thousand dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
