Apple Continues Notebook Push

Apple sees notebook sales catching up to desktops. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Notebook computers have been gaining on sales of desktop machine throughout the PC industry... but the transition is being pushed along faster at Apple. Hardware products VP Greg Joswiak...

"We are going to get to the point in the foreseeable future that we're selling as many notebooks as we are desktops, significantly ahead of the industry trend. And the industry is certainly going portable."

Apple has added a 15 inch wide screen model to its PowerBook line. It certainly isn't the least expensive on the market... but Apple includes support for Bluetooth and accepts Apple's Airport Extreme as 802.11G wireless card. There's also Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and FireWire 800. It's also one of the first notebooks to have DVI or digital video output... along with VGA and S-Video... allowing users to connect to a wide variety of monitors or TVs. A DVD, CD-RW drive is standard... a DVD burning SuperDrive is an upgrade. Joswiak says there have been some changes in design...

"And we have now moved to an entire PowerBook line based on anodized aluminum, which is a very sophisticated and professional looking product."

Pricing starts at about two thousand dollars. Apple is also now selling a Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse for those who want to use its notebooks as desktop machines. The company still trails laptop industry leaders Hewlett Packard, Toshiba, IBM and Sony. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
