Pocket Sized Digital Cameras

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 9, 2003

Pocket sized digital cameras. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Veo, a company that has been making a line of digital cameras for Palm and PocketPC PDAs, is hoping to sell consumers on the idea of taking cameras everywhere. VP Tim Martin says there's a keychain model...

"This camera is actually a 1.3 megapixel camera so you get some good images. And with the expandable SD memory you can store hundreds and hundreds of pictures."

The expandable memory in a keychain camera makes it unique. The resolution is okay for printing snapshot sized photos... and is a step up from the cameras that are being built into many cell phones. But don't expect the image quality to be equal to the three or four megapixel cameras that have been dropping in price. Veo, in fact, is planning an under one hundred dollar three megapixel camera... .

"This is much more of a full featured camera, it has the TFT LCD in it. It has SD memory. And our marketing tag line on this is it's all about style and pictures. So it's small, stylish, fun to carry around. Easy to put in your purse or your backpack. And it takes some very nice pictures."

But the competition is intensifying. Gateway, for instance, is selling a four megapixel digital camera for under two hundred dollars. Veo is also selling a wireless network camera... that works with 802.11b networks in homes or small offices... that requires no PC... and allows users to monitor the camera via the Web. A model that lets you remotely pan and tilt the camera... sells for under three hundred dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
