Dell Enters the TV Business

Techstination feature for Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Dell enters the TV business. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Gateway was the first computer maker to make a big push into the consumer electronics business when it started selling big plasma screen TVs a year ago. Since then it has introduced smaller LCD TVs and digital cameras. Now Dell is jumping in too... .with a 17 inch wide screen LCD TV that can also serve as a computer monitor. Product marketing manager Jennifer Kern...

One of the nice things about this is just the general flexibility of the connectivity which allows a user to hook up either dual inputs for their PC system, analog or digital, as well as for the video aspects. We have component, composite and S-video connections for their use. And it's all backed by the traditional, standard Dell systems service and support."

Unlike rival Gateway... Dell has still been making money in the computer business. So why start selling TVs?

"As we see the PC emerge as the center for digital entertainment in the home, there's a growing need for these types of devices. What our customers are telling us is that they'd like to see a feature rich LCD TV from Dell with that same level of service and support as well as general product quality."

It will compete with screens made by traditional TV makers like Samsung, Sony, Panasonic and Sharp. But competition will be intense with prices already falling. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
