A New Office... From Microsoft

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 23, 2003

A new version of Microsoft Office. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Office is the number two money maker for Microsoft... right behind Windows... and Microsoft has made some significant changes in the first new version of the software in two years. For everyday users... they'll see the biggest difference in Outlook... the email, address book and calendar application. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates...

"Email today... you love email, you hate email. It is certainly a glass half full and some days you see some aspects of it and some days you see the other. Just finding things in email is too hard."

Outlook 2003 includes new tools for sorting and viewing email... and filtering out unwanted email. Gates tells us he is hoping productivity savings will convince corporations to upgrade. If they do... new applications... could help Microsoft sell more of its server software as well...

"There is a single architectural approach. There's a view of the products working together and using an approach, the Web services approach, let integration be at a very different level than ever before."

While there are competitors such as WordPerfect from Corel... .and StarOffice from Sun, Office has a better than 90 percent market share. Pricing for the new edition starts at about 400 dollars. The Student and Teacher edition... which many households are eligible for... .sells for under 150 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
