Can Sony Dominate Digital Cameras Again?

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Can Sony dominate digital camera sales again? Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Not too many years ago, Sony was number one in the digital camera business... largely due to its Mavica line... which stored pictures on standard floppy disks...

And the advantage of recording to the floppy disk was that that was the universal media back then. So it made digital photography very available to consumers."

Sony's senior marketing manager for digital still cameras Jim Malcolm. As the resolution of digital cameras increased... .those disks became inadequate for storing larger image files. And Sony is facing tougher competition from companies like Canon, Fuji and Olympus. While it won't be out in time for the holiday season, the most unique digital camera Sony has on the way is the Cyber-shot DSC-T1...

And the DSC-T1 is a very small, compact camera. It's very flat... it's much like a deck of cards would be. There is a front flap on it that you simply slide down and the camera instantly starts up. Inside the camera is a 3X optical zoom lens. You'll notice what's different here is that the lens does not extrude out the front of the camera."

The movement for the zoom is inside the camera... technology similar to what Konica Minolta has used in its Dimage line of digital cameras. What's unique in the Sony... is its large 2 and a half inch LCD screen on the back. That makes it great for reviewing photos you've taken. Sony expects the price for the five megapixel camera to be about 550 dollars. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
