New Designs in Cell Phones

Techstination feature for Thursday, November 27, 2003

New designs in cell phones. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Makers of cell phones have been busy... coming up with what seem like endless design schemes... aimed at convincing consumers to buy the newest, coolest looking handsets. Kyocera, for instance, has a new Slider series... the front of the tiny phones slides up to unveil a keypad...

"This phone is designed first and foremost to be eye catching. We're here announcing the new MTV V Slider that's being sold by Virgin Mobile exclusively. It's the first ever MTV branded cell phone."

Kyocera's John Chier. Not all cell phone designs are aimed at the young and hip. Nokia has heard complaints from some consumers with a few more years under their belts about how difficult it can be to see small displays and push tiny buttons. And so business development senior VP Paul Chellgrin says Nokia is introducing the 6010...

"Which is our first phone really targeted at the more mature user. And so the focus is having really big display fonts so you can easily read it. Having big keys and at the same time having a kind of a classic, universally appealing design so that it's appealing to the broad market... but really appealing to the more mature user."

The idea is no hunting for the glasses when you need to make a call. Nokia by the way, is also the maker of the Ngage combination cell phone video game machine slash MP3 player... aimed at a slightly different generation. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
