A new shape in sound for your PC. Speakers that are flat. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. They look amazing. Where does the sound come from? Using technology developed in the U.K., a company called Benwin has developed affordable flat panel speakers for multimedia computers. Except for a small exciter on the back, the panels are perfectly flat and only about a quarter of an inch thick. Benwin's Linda Kazares...

"We're using a proprietary material that's the face of the speaker with this little exciter disc attached to the back of it. And what happens is, when information is sent to the exciter, it then vibrates the face of this material. And it acts like the tweeter and the speaker mechanism, not really like a traditional speaker, but the sound comes out from the entire surface of the speaker face."

The 99 dollar BW2000 speaker system includes a small subwoofer that sits on the floor. The sound is not as rich as some other higher end PC speaker systems, but it isn't bad. And there's a real gee whiz factor about the appearance. Look for more shapes and sizes in the future...

"We can do things with the face of the speaker. In fact, we could silk screen designs, different motifs on the face of the speaker because it doesn't inhibit the sound coming out."
