Techstination feature for Tuesday, December 23, 2003

Consumers have been snapping up digital cameras. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Even before this holiday season, digital camera sales were hot. InfoTrends Research Group this month said shipments this year will be up 54 percent over last year... .with nearly one out of every three U.S. households now owning a digital camera. Ted Fox, who heads the Photo Marketing Association... says digital has given the entire industry a boost... initially generating interest among computer enthusiasts...

"Now what we're finding is a lot of digital cameras are getting into the hands of the soccer moms. The husbands bought it because it was the new. Latest, greatest toy. Mom just wants pictures of the kids."

InfoTrends says Canon may pass Sony in the coming year as the top digital camera maker. Canon has made a big splash lately with its Digital Rebel... the first digital SLR... or single lens reflex camera... .for under a thousand dollars. Canon USA's director of U.S. consumer camera sales Eliott Peck...

"One of the strong points of the Digital Rebel is that any EOS camera, film camera... those lenses that they've bought, right now we have a menu of almost 60 EF lenses available, work perfectly in all functions with the EOS Digital Rebel."

The good news for the 70 percent of households that haven't purchased a digital camera yet... is that prices should continue to fall in 2004. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
