Navigating the Future of GPS

Techstination feature for Monday, December 29, 2003

Navigating the future of GPS. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Global positioning satellites are used by a wide variety of navigation systems for cars, trucks, boats and aircraft. There are dedicated handheld devices for hikers... and there is equipment that can turn hand held or notebook computers into portable navigation systems. ALK Technologies, founded by Princeton University Professor Alain Kornhauser nearly 25 years ago... has created systems used by consumers and the transportation industry. What he's been waiting for is a way to link GPS... with real time traffic information... through wireless data connections. It's finally arriving... in the state of Minnesota...

"What they've decided to do in Minnesota is they've invested in gathering this data and what they've decided is that it's their public mission to now disseminate this information."

ALK's TravRoute arm sells Co-Pilot Live software for PocketPCs and now notebooks. The communication link to traffic data systems can be used to automatically route users around traffic problems. And with privacy safeguards, Kornhauser says navigation equipped vehicles can use data links to instantly report developing traffic problems...

"While you're traveling on a road ahead, without letting anybody know that it's you, tell the people behind you what the conditions are."

Sort of like an updated, high tech version of those old CB radios. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
