Dropping Prices for DVRs

Dropping prices for DVRs. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. ReplayTV... which pioneered the concept of home digital video recorders before the arrival of Tivo... has lowered the price of its latest models... .hoping to gain ground. A box that can record 40 hours of video on a hard drive now sells for under 150 dollars... .and the models go all the way to one which can store 320 hours... for about 800 dollars. Similar to Tivo... buyers have choice of paying a 12.95 a month subscription or 300 dollar one time fee. About the company's strategy, ReplayTV president Bernie Sepaniak says...

"Tivo has focused on mass distribution through cable and satellite TV operators as well as retail. Replay's focus is consistent with the rest of the D&M Holdings brands which are to establish a premium position in premium distribution channels."

ReplayTV will likely face more competition in the year ahead from cable and satellite boxes adding DVR capability...and similar functions available on Media Center PCs. Sepaniak says Replay has its own advantages...

"We have a tremendous amount of capacity ranges, all the way from 40 hour to 320 hour. We have the most sophisticated and powerful networking features that come in the product. They are not an add-on accessory."

As they are with rival Tivo... which has gained ground through its partnership with DirecTV. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
