Cool New Gadgets on the Way... Casio's Xfer

What kinds of cool gadgets are coming in the new year? Portable video. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Archos and RCA were the first to introduce portable devices that store digital video... and this year... other companies will join in. A company called Smartdisk has created what it calls the Flashtrax multimedia device. It can store digital pictures, music and motion JPEG video... the type of video created by the movie mode of many digital still cameras. It can copy and store images and video directly from camera memory cards... .but the device would be even more useful if it supported other forms of digital video. Another neat device on the way this year... .is the Xfer from Casio. Director of consumer product development Scott Nelson...

"The Xfer is a 10 inch LCD wireless TV. It has a battery in it, so you can walk around the house, it's 2.4 gigahertz, a hundred foot. So basically you can go out in the yard. The idea behind this TV is the base station you plug into any video, be it your cable box or VCR, whatever you want, and you now have a piece that you can take anywhere in your house. And we think a lot of people are going to look at this as... instead of having two or three smaller TVs in a house, they just have one of these... and they just move from room to room and they don't have to worry about the cable connection."

The problem is... the portable screen and base station will sell for a thousand to thirteen hundred dollars. More than the price of several smaller TVs. But the concept is cool... it's on sale in Japan already. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin
