Star Wars Menace to the Net?

Techstination feature for Tuesday, April 13, 1999

It isn't just the Melissa Virus that can clog email systems. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. The latest threat, according to a recent report from NetworkWorld, comes from George Lucas. Network and email administrators are doing battle with behemoth files.... (sound).... the online trailers for Star Wars Episode One... (sound) The trailers weigh in at between 11 and 25 megabytes. That's big. And when employees or students use their fast Internet connections at work or at school...to dowload them and then start emailing them around, the trailer files can cause a lot of congestion. David Byrkit is the email administrator at ITT Avionics...

"I knew people who would undoubtedly get it. Sure enough, they had it. So it was here in our mail server already."

The files are so big that just one of the trailers is larger than the entire email space given to many employees or students. But downloading them at home with standard modem connections would take forever. For the record, Byrkit has checked out at least one of the trailers himself...

"It's beautiful. As is I'm sure the movie. I can't wait to see it."

Apple has permission to carry the trailers on it's website and says more than six millon copies have been downloaded. They are also available, of course, at starwars.com.
