While the sales were below the most optimistic forecasts, the Entertainment Software Association says its growth last year outpaced the growth by the movie and music industries. Association President Douglas Lowenstein says games made for the PlayStation2, Xbox and Game Cube outsold those made for personal computers...

"Console games represent the overwhelmingly largest portion of the market. In 2003, console game sales were about 5.8 billion compared to just about 1.2 billion for computer game sales. That's been a trend we've been seeing for some time as the consoles have become more sophisticated."

And while Congress and the media have focused on the amount of sex and violence in video games, Lowenstein says 2003 saw a decline in the sales figures for mature rated games... .

"A lot of people think that most of the best selling games are mature rated games with lots of violence and in fact, that's simply not the case. Last year, for example, 54 percent of all games sold were rated Everyone, 30 percent of all games were rated Teen and only about 12 percent were rated Mature."
